Adam to Noah - The Gospel in the Names

There are treasures to be found even in the genealogies. The genealogy of Noah in Genesis 5 is not noticed because we need to look at the name meanings in Hebrew. Let’s examine the meaning of the 10 names listed.

Adam means “Man.” That’s easy enough.

Adam’s son was named Seth, which means “appointed.” Eve said, “For God hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.”1

Seth’s son was called Enosh, which means “mortal,” “frail,” or “miserable.” It is from the root anash, to be incurable, used of a wound, grief, woe, sickness, or wickedness.

Enosh’s son was named Kenan, which can mean “sorrow,” or “wandering nomad.”  Balaam, looking down from the heights of Moab, puns upon the name of the Kenites when he prophesies their destruction.

Kenan’s son was Mahalalel, which means “the Blessed God.” (Often Hebrew names include El, one of the names of God, as Dan-iel, “God is my Judge,” etc.)

Mahalalel’s son was named Jared, from a verb yaradh, meaning “shall come down.” (Some authorities also tie this to the “Sons of God” corrupting the daughters of men, resulting in the Nephilim of Genesis 6.)

Jared’s son was named Enoch, which means “teaching.” He was the first of four generations of preachers. In fact, the earliest recorded prophecy was by Enoch, and which, amazingly enough, dealt with the Second Coming of Christ (although it is quoted in Jude 14, 15 in the New Testament):

Methuselah comes from Muth, a root that means “death”; and from shalak, which means “to bring.” The name Methuselah means, “his death shall bring.”3 Methuselah’s father was given a prophecy of the coming Great Flood, and was apparently told that as long as his son was alive, the judgement of the flood would be withheld. The year Methuselah died, the flood came.

Methuselah’s son was named Lamech, which means “despairing.” This same root also seems to lie behind our English word, lamentation.

Lamech, of course, was the father of Noah, which is linked with nacham, “to bring relief” or “comfort.” This is highlighted in Genesis 5:29.

 The Composite List

Hebrew      English

Adam             Man

Seth              Appointed

Enosh            Mortal

Kenan            Sorrow;

Mahalalel        The Blessed God

Jared              Shall come down

Enoch            Teaching

Methuselah     His death shall bring

Lamech          The Despairing

Noah              Comfort, or Rest.

“Man (is) appointed mortal sorrow; (but) the Blessed God shall come down teaching (that) His death shall bring (the) despairing rest.”

Here’s the “gospel” hidden within a genealogy in Genesis! (It is hard to imagine Jewish rabbis “conspiring” to hide the “Christian Gospel” right here in their venerated Torah!)

Construct a Geneology

Try to design a genealogy, of actual people, with the following parameters:

1) The number of words in it must be divisible by 7 evenly.

2) The number of letters must also be divisible by 7.

3) The number of vowels and the number of consonants must also each be divisible by 7.

4) The number of words that begin with a vowel must be divisible by 7.

5) The number of words that begin with a consonant must be divisible by 7.

6) The number of words that occur more than once must be divisible by 7.

7) The number of words that occur in more than one form shall be divisible by 7.

8) The number of words that occur in only one form shall be divisible by 7.

9) The number of nouns shall be divisible by 7.

10) Only 7 words shall NOT be nouns.

11) The number of names in the genealogy shall be divisible by 7.

12) Only 7 other kinds of nouns are permitted.

13) The number of male names shall be divisible by 7.

14) The number of generations shall be 21, also divisible by 7.

This is the genealogy of Jesus Christ, in Greek, in Matthew.

Alpha and Omega

The First and the Last:

And I will pour upon the house of David, and  upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son... Zechariah 12:10

This passage is remarkable since it speaks of the end times, and yet presents the Messiah of Israel as the “One Whom They Have Pierced.” Thus, it is also an allusion to the crucifixion.

It is even more remarkable when one examines the Hebrew text.  There is an un-translated word between the “me” and the “whom.” It is simply two letters, the aleph and the tau, the first and last letters of the Hebrew alphabet!

This seems to suggest a more insightful translation: ...and they shall look upon me, the Aleph and the Tau, whom they have pierced.... In Greek, it would be “the Alpha and the Omega!”
